How orthotics help with plantar fasciitis relief

Orthotics for plantar fasciitis are designed to reduce strain on the plantar fascia, support the arch and improve how your foot moves with each step. By redistributing pressure away from the heel and improving alignment, they help relieve pain, improve comfort and support long-term recovery.

Understanding how orthotics work — and why they’re effective for heel pain and plantar fasciitis — can help you make the right decision for your recovery. Below, we answer some of the most common questions about orthotics, how they work and what you can expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

ORTHOTICS FOR HEEL PAIN & PLANTAR FASCIITIS

  • Yes. Prescription orthotics work with your body’s natural biomechanics to support healing. By reducing strain on the plantar fascia and distributing pressure more evenly, they help the foot recover naturally without relying on pain medication or invasive treatments.

  • Many patients begin to notice improvement within a few weeks, with the best results achieved through consistent daily use of their orthotics.

  • Prescription orthotics are designed by podiatrists based on how your feet move and function. Unlike generic insoles, they are tailored to your specific needs to provide targeted support, improve movement and reduce strain.

  • Most prescription orthotics last between 12–24 months depending on usage, footwear and daily load. We recommend having them checked every 12–18 months to ensure they’re still supporting you correctly, as your feet and gait can change over time.

  • Heel pain and plantar fasciitis are often caused by excessive strain on the plantar fascia, the ligament that supports your arch. This can be due to poor foot mechanics, long periods of standing, unsupportive footwear or increased activity levels.

Orthotics help by supporting the arch, improving alignment and reducing pressure on the heel, allowing the foot to function more efficiently and recover over time.

  • Yes. Our online assessment allows our podiatrists to assess your movement and prescribe orthotics without needing an in-person appointment. This makes it easy to access podiatrist-prescribed orthotics from home.

  • Complete a short online assessment, answer a few quick questions and upload a video of you walking. Our podiatrists assess your movement, foot structure and lifestyle before prescribing orthotics tailored to you. Your orthotics are then made and delivered directly to your door.

🎥 How to Record Your Walking Video

To get the perfect prescription, our podiatrists need to see how you walk. Don’t worry — it’s quick and easy! Watch the short video below for a simple guide on how to film your walking video at home.

1. Find a flat, clear space
A hallway, driveway or quiet footpath works well. Make sure the area is clear of obstacles.

2. Set up your phone/camera
Ask a friend or family member to film or place your phone on a stable surface about 3–4 metres away.

3. Walk naturally
Walk away from the camera for 5–6 steps, then turn and walk back towards it.
Repeat this 2–3 times at your normal walking pace.

4. Check your video
Make sure your feet and legs are clearly visible in the frame and the video isn’t shaky or blurry.

5. Upload with your assessment
Attach the video when completing your online assessment and you’re done!
