What is a Podiatrist?

A Podiatrist is a university trained health professional who deals with the prevention, diagnosis, investigation, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

Podiatrists treat a vast range of conditions such as bone and joint disorders, arthritis, soft-tissue and muscular injuries as well as neurological and circulatory diseases including diabetes. They are also able to diagnose and treat any complications which affect the lower limb, including sports and musculoskeletal injuries, skin and nail disorders, corns, calluses and ingrown toenails.

To become a Podiatrist you must complete a 4 year university Bachelor’s Degree and be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Prior to 1977 Podiatrists were known as chiropodists. The name was officially changed to Podiatrist to reflect the upgrading of education levels and an expansion in the scope of practice by the profession.
